About BNP Paribas
The foundation of BNP Paribas can be traced back to the 19th century when banking as an industry was in its nascent stages. BNP Paribas has 4 banking institutions in its DNA. The Banque Nationale de Paris S.A. (BNP) was formed when two French banks, BNCI and CNEP merged in 1966. CNEP can be said to be the precursor of BNP Paribas. It was established in March 1848 by the then French Provisional Government as a countermeasure to the financial instability caused by the February 1848 revolution.
Paribas, or Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas S.A, was formed a few decades later in 1872 when two investment banks merged.
BNP and Paribas were separate entities till 2000 when they merged to form BNP Paribas, one of the largest financial institutions in the world. In terms of total assets, BNP Paribas ranks 8th in the world. It is the largest bank in the Eurozone, with over €2 trillion in net assets.
Interestingly, BNP Paribas was the first significant financial organisation to identify and acknowledge the sub-prime crisis, which would balloon into a full-blown economic crisis in the following months. On 9 August 2007, they withdrew 2 funds that were exposed to the impact of the crisis. Many financial experts view this day as the beginning of the financial crisis of 2007-08.
In 2010, BNP Paribas acquired a majority stake in the Fortis Bank group, which brought in their investment portfolios under the French conglomerate.
